Getting Your Research Seen: Strategies and Tools for Successful Academic Publishing
Tuesday, July 18, 2023 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM (EDT)
DESCRIPTION
The aphorism “publish or perish'' is one that is well known to researchers, academics and students alike. Though this phrase tends to elicit a chuckle or eye roll, the world of academic publishing is both highly competitive and difficult. This workshop will focus on improving writing skills and submission strategies for academic publishing. A combination of lectures from current Managing Editor Lauren Swan-Potras, a Q&A or recorded discussion with Editor-in-Chief Scott Ratzan, and breakout sessions will provide hands-on experience both for those who are new to the peer review process and those in the process of submitting their research for publication. Attendees will be able to identify strengths and weaknesses of their writing samples, learn how to effectively communicate with journal editors, how to create a successful and engaging abstract and gain valuable insight into this commonly stressful process.
Beyond Plain Language: Creating Materials for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Literacy Limitations
Tuesday, July 18, 2023 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM (EDT)
DESCRIPTION
Although many public health organizations attempt to ensure that their information, messages, and materials are understandable and actionable, people with an intellectual or developmental disability, as well as others with literacy limitations, may still have difficulty understanding public health messages meant for the public. In close collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, RTI International and CommunicateHealth have developed a Product Development Tool to guide development of products (e.g., website information, print materials, videos) for people with intellectual disabilities and extreme low literacy (IDD/ELL).
In this two-and-a-half-hour session, learn why developing specific products for this audience during public health emergencies is essential and how to do it. This workshop will be hands-on, so come ready to storyboard and create!
We will wrap up with lessons learned about how to engage this audience in material testing, as well as implications for broader, low-literacy audiences.

Social Media for Behavior Change
Tuesday, July 18, 2023 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM (EDT)
DESCRIPTION
Countless resources exist to teach you how to use social media. And, increasingly, many others address the elements of behavior change. This groundbreaking training combines both topics, focusing on how to optimize your social media outreach for behavior change as part of a social marketing program.
Based on the Social Media for Behavior Change (SM4BC) Toolkit, created by Nedra Kline Weinreich for the International Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies, this interactive workshop will teach you the step-by-step process of building your strategy, designing your social media communications, and engaging with your online community in a way that makes behavior change more likely. This training is for people who are already familiar with the basics of social media and behavior change, and are ready for the next level of how to best combine different elements of each to achieve their objectives.
The SM4BC process takes you through a series of questions that need to be answered and provides a framework for thinking through your options strategically. In this workshop, you will learn: (1) How to follow the steps of the process to develop an effective Social Media for Behavior Change strategy, (2) How to match the behavioral levers for your audience with social media messaging and post design elements, and (3) How to engage with your audience on social media to reinforce your behavioral objectives. Through hands-on activities and opportunities to put the ideas into practice, you will come out of the training with the foundations of a strategy for your own program and the ability to put it into practice.
