A Riverside native, Acosta started his journalism career at The Press-Enterprise as a summer intern. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from UC Riverside and a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
For many years, Acosta was president of the Inland Chapter of the California Chicano News Media Association, which awarded scholarships to Latino students and staged journalism workshops for high school and college students. He also served on the CCNMA state board of directors.
