2022 NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HEALTH COMMUNICATION, MARKETING AND MEDIA

Let’s Talk about Maternal Health: Addressing Health Inequities for Moms, Infants and Our Communities

Sponsored by Humana Healthy Horizons

Monday, August 16, 2022 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM (EDT)

TOPIC DESCRIPTION & OVERVIEW

As many states and communities seek to address health equity, maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the US – particularly among women of color – demonstrate how much work is needed for equity to be obtained. This session offers an opportunity to discuss maternal healthcare through a systems-change lens. Panelists include Humana Healthy Horizons (Humana’s Medicaid plan) in Ohio and March of Dimes, and they will review how they operationalize equity through collaboration, deep listening, leadership and education to serve women beyond pregnancy and throughout their entire reproductive years. We will provide a data snapshot of the benefits of maternal health services for improving perinatal outcomes and offer an overview of challenges and benefits organizations face when working to change the trend lines in maternal health. We will approach the conversation from the perspectives of how we engage women in care, with campaigns such as CDC’s “Hear Her,” and also how we engage partners to address the systemic issues. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the diverse stakeholders who shape the local maternal healthcare landscape and learn examples of how effective communication and education before, during and after pregnancy can be leveraged to address health disparities.

SESSION GOAL & OBJECTIVES

  1. Identify community partners that can help shape the local maternal healthcare landscape
  2. Identify challenges and benefits when engaging women in maternal health before, during and after pregnancy
  3. Gain a deeper understanding of best communication practices and how to engage stakeholders in discussions around maternal healthcare
